Just seen a headline that Adobe is acquiring Topaz. Haven't seen it on Adobe's own site yet so grain of salt, but if it's true I've got a perpetual Topaz licence I bought for my D850 astro stuff and I'm wondering what happens to it. Does it become a Creative Cloud thing? Do they let it die quietly? Anyone know more?

Also if they rename it Adobe Topaz it's going to sound like a birthstone you buy at a mall kiosk.

Saw the same, only one site carrying it so far. If its true I give the standalone app about 18 months honestly. Thats what normally happens when a big company buys the little one, the good bits get folded into the main app and the original gets 'maintenance updates' until it quietly stops working on the new Mac OS

This is why I keep saying own your tools, and even then, read what "own" means. A perpetual licence is only perpetual for as long as the company that sold it to you exists in the same form.

Your current version will keep running, almost certainly. Nobody reaches into your machine and switches it off. What you lose is everything around it: updates for new OS versions, new camera support, new models, and eventually the activation server if the product is retired. I've watched this happen to three apps I paid for over the years. One of them still runs on an old laptop I keep in a closet purely for that reason, which tells you everything.

If it's true, my advice is boring: download the installer for your current version now and keep it with your licence key, and don't buy any upgrade plans until somebody says in writing what happens to them.

That's about all I need honestly, my D850 isn't getting any newer. Neither am I. Installer downloaded, key in my password manager. If it stops working one day I'll go back to stacking more frames and denoising the old-fashioned way, it's how I did it for years.

Before everyone panics, is there any confirmation? I can find only one article and it does not quote anybody from Topaz or Adobe. Usually with an acquisition there is a press release from both sides on the same day, and there is nothing on either website. Maybe it is true, but I would wait one week before changing any plans.

Nothing new on this that I've seen, still just the one report going around and nothing from either company. Either it's being kept very quiet or somebody got it wrong. Back to my regularly scheduled stacking. Happy 4th to the US folks, and to everybody else, happy Saturday.
