so i'm seeing headlines that the supreme court struck down the tariffs today. does that mean the price hikes go away? been holding off on the 16-55 II because it went up so much. or is this one of those things where prices go up instantly and never come down

That's the one. Retailers priced the tariffs in months ago and they're not going to cut margin until something forces them to. And with new ones announced the same day, nobody's going to drop prices on a ruling that may or may not stick.
Honestly I stopped trying to time this stuff last year. I've got weddings booked through October and I need the gear to work, so I buy when I need it and I budget for it in my rates. If you need the lens for a job, buy it. If you don't, wait for a sale like always, and keep an eye on the used market, that's where the real savings are when people panic-sell. I bought the R6 III at full price in January and it's already paid for itself. Waiting would have cost me more than any tariff.
I've got the II and it's worth having. Buy it used, the tariff's already been paid by someone else.
