Without, and only onto mirrorless. FD to Canon EF DSLR adapters need a glass element to reach infinity and they're nearly all mush. FD to E, FD to Z, FD to X... those are just a tube with a ring, because the mirrorless flange is so much shorter. Get one where the little aperture lever actually works and you're sorted. Budget about £20.

Joining late. Old 28mm f/2.8 AI-S on the D850 for star trails, because the focus ring has a proper hard stop at infinity and none of my modern stuff does. It's the only lens I own that's older than my jokes.

D850 | 28mm f/2.8 AI-S | f/4 | 30s | ISO 800 | 120 frames stacked

Correct. And for anyone putting old Summiluxes and Elmars on Sonys: I tried my 50 on a friend's A7R and it was fine. Fine is the word. The lens was designed to be looked through on an M, and the M3 finder is still the best way to see a 50mm frame line.

Late to this, but the honest answer for Pentax people is that we don't need adapters at all. Old K-mount primes go straight on the K-1 II, with shake reduction, and the A-series lenses even meter properly. Forty-year-old SMC glass on a current full-frame body with no faff. That's half the reason I'm still on Pentax, if I'm being candid.

The Pentax people always say this, and the irritating thing is that they're always right... my dad bought a K1000 in 1979 with the 50 f/2 and I still have the receipt in a biscuit tin somewhere, along with a ticket for a Wishbone Ash gig and a single Swiss franc. Forty-odd quid for the lot, body and lens, from a shop in Hove that's a vape place now. Does anybody keep receipts any more? Or is it all emails now, floating about in the ether where you can't put your hand on them? I sometimes think the biscuit tin was a better filing system than anything that came after it. You could find things in a biscuit tin. You could find things in a biscuit tin with the lights off.

Anyway the 50 f/2 is still on the K1000 and still perfectly good, which rather proves the Pentax point, doesn't it... though I'd never say so in front of a Nikon man. Not that any of this has anything to do with lenses, I suppose.

Ha. Pick up a cheap old film body with a Helios on it, Theo, you'll have more fun than you can handle for about forty quid. A Zenit or a Praktica, and a couple of rolls of HP5. The X Half is a lovely thing but there's nothing like an old lens you've got to focus yourself... and if you don't get on with it you'll sell it on for what you paid. Just saying
