Clearing the loft at the weekend (my sister's idea, not mine... who clears a loft voluntarily?) and out came Dad's Super Takumar 135mm f/3.5, still in its little leather case, smelling of the 1970s. Held it up to the window and there's a faint web of fungus in there. Not huge. Sort of a pale snowflake, somewhere in the middle, though it's hard to tell how deep it is when you're squinting through it like a jeweller.

He used to say you should never take a lens apart unless you're prepared to put it in a drawer forever afterwards, which I always took to be about lenses but now suspect was about life in general.

Has anyone opened one of these up themselves? I don't care about it being worth anything. I'd just like to put it on the Spotmatic and take a photo with it, for him really.

Depends where it is. If it's on a surface you can reach by unscrewing the front or rear group, people do it themselves with proper lens cleaning fluid, cotton buds and a lot of patience. If it's deep in the middle, between cemented elements, or it's etched the coating, you're into repair-shop territory, and on a 135 f/3.5 that'll cost more than the lens is worth. Sentimental value's a different sum, mind.

There was a thread about a cobwebbed Takumar in here last winter, worth a read. In the meantime keep it somewhere dry and out of that case. A few days on a sunny windowsill is supposed to slow the stuff down, or so they say.
