QuestionDog walks after work are getting too dark for my kit lens, would the 50mm help?

Sorry if this is a silly question. I mostly photograph my dog (Biscuit, a very fast beagle) and now it's getting darker in the evenings my walk photos are all either blurry or really grainy. I'm using the 18-150 that came with my R10, on the auto mode with the little running man.

Lots of people seem to say get the 50mm 1.8. Would that actually fix it, or is it the camera? I don't really understand the f numbers if I'm honest, I just know the 50 is cheap. Thanks!

Not a silly question at all! Your 18-150 is f/6.3 at the long end and the 50 is f/1.8, which lets in roughly three and a half stops more light. In plain English, the camera can use a much faster shutter speed at the same ISO, and a fast shutter speed is what freezes a speeding beagle. It'll make a big difference.

The catch is it doesn't zoom, so you'll be doing the zooming with your feet. On an R10 it frames like an 80mm, which is lovely for a dog at a few metres but tight if Biscuit comes barrelling straight at you. Mine are birds rather than dogs, but I lean on fast glass and Auto ISO every evening from now until March!

Sorry, is that the Tv on the dial? I'll be honest I've never moved it off the green square or the running man. I did try M once and every photo came out black so I panicked and put it back. Should I be changing the focus settings as well or leave those alone?

Ordered the 50 on Saturday and it came today. Took it out for the last bit of the walk tonight and got Biscuit mid-leap after his ball, actually sharp! Still a bit grainy but you're right, I really don't mind. Thank you so much everyone
