Ok so we're doing Rome and the Amalfi coast in July (I know, I know, it's going to be a million degrees) and I'm trying to figure out what to pack. I have my R8 with the 50 1.8 and the 85 f2, which I love for the kids, but I'm worried I'll be stuck when I want the big views or the inside of the churches.

Do I need a wide zoom? My husband says I'm overthinking it and should just use my phone for the wide stuff lol. I really don't want to carry a big bag in that heat with two kids and a stroller. What would you guys do?

One lens for travel, always. I did Italy two summers ago with one body and one zoom and never once wished I'd brought more, but I did wish I'd brought less water and more patience for the crowds at the Trevi.

If budget allows, the little RF 24-105 STM covers the churches and the coast and you leave both primes at home. It's light, it's cheap used, and 24mm is enough for the Pantheon if you stand in the middle and tilt up a bit. The Amalfi coast is mostly long views from the road above Positano, and 105mm is lovely for picking out the stacked houses.

If not, your husband's right. Phone for wide, 50 for everything else. In July heat with a stroller you'll want one hand free at all times.

Also go to the Colosseum at opening time. By ten it's a wall of selfie sticks. Worth the alarm.
