  1. Used OM-1 (first one) under a grand now, worth jumping from the GX9?

For birds in flight the difference will be considerable. The GX9 was never designed for that. But yes, the lens is the real question. The 12-60 won't get you anywhere near a redshank on the mud…

  2. Starling murmurations, settings that don't turn into mush?

Get there earlier and shoot the arrivals rather than the main display. The small groups coming in from the feeding fields in the half hour before they gather are often lit by what's left of the sun…

  3. Bradgate rut yesterday, people getting way too close

Richmond Park was much the same last weekend. The stags are running on adrenaline at this point. They've barely eaten for a fortnight, they've been fighting, and a couple of hundred kilos of red…

  4. Sony FE 400 f/4.5 GM and 600 f/6.3 GM announced, both under 1kg

None taken. We'll compare notes in two years.

  5. Sony FE 400 f/4.5 GM and 600 f/6.3 GM announced, both under 1kg

The 600 at f/6.3 is the interesting one. A light 600 prime changes how far you're willing to walk to a hide, and that's where the birds actually are. Zoom flexibility matters less than people think…

  6. Panasonic 'exit' rumours again. Is MFT dying or just shrinking?

Well. OM System have just announced a new PEN. Not quite the funeral some were predicting.

  7. The PEN is back! OM System PEN with an EVF and weather sealing

A sealed PEN would have been a lovely thing to have on the Ouse Washes last January, when the Bewick's were in and it rained sideways for three days. Too small for the 300 f/4, obviously, but…

  8. Panasonic 'exit' rumours again. Is MFT dying or just shrinking?

Possibly. But my 300 f/4 doesn't stop working on the day of an announcement. Nor does the OM-1. The marsh harriers at Wicken Fen won't know what mount I'm using.

  9. Six months of jumping spiders (sorry, again)

Lovely project. One species, proper observation, behaviour noted down. That's how naturalists used to work and the photographs are better for it. The best bird photographers I know work the same…

  10. New Sony 100-400 f/4.5 GM - worth it over my 70-350 for birds, or a used 200-600?

I'd mostly agree, with one caveat. Speaking from the MFT side, where the 300mm f/4 gives me 600mm equivalent in a package I'll happily carry across the fen all day... the number that matters on a…
